What is the Lampstand Emergent Worship Service?
The Lampstand Emergent Worship Service takes place every Sunday morning from 9-9:50am in the Celebration Center. The service is named "The Lampstand" because its aim is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world as based on Matthew 5:14-16:'You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.'
This service is called "Emergent" because it is creative/aesthetic, participatory, includes elements of technology, and has various genres of music. There is not one template for this service; liturgical practices range from dramatic interpretation of Scripture to taizé prayer services. We offer the means of grace of Communion in most Lampstand services.
When and Why Did it start?
This service started with four pilot services on August 15, 2010. The official launch of the service was September 12, 2010. In the first Capital Campaign, WMUMC named that they wanted to build the Celebration Center in order to provide mission and ministry opportunities to the surrounding community. With this service, we have been able to make the ministry opportunity of an additional worship service a reality.Who is it for?
This service is for all people because God desires for all people to worship God. This service started in order to offer Warwick Memorial UMC and the surrounding community an opportunity for an additional worship service. It was also created to meet the needs of all people with specific care to the 20-40 age group and those without a church home. Sermons in this service are teaching-based and they include practical application for modern day struggles. For more information contact Pastor Jessie Squires.
