All meetings are at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

Church Council Minutes

During our planning session, we decided to have one major goal for the church. There are many on-going ministries at WMUMC that do not fit under this goal, which is fine, and they will continue as before. At the last council meeting, three subgoals were presented to work toward our church goal and are described below. If you would like to participate in any of these ministries please see the contact person.

Church Goal: In 2009, we will focus bringing the 20-40 age group unchurched (unclaimed) population in Newport News into our church and ministering to them by:

  • Learning how to engage them
  • Doubling their participation in the Church
  • Integrating them into the church family

Upward Basketball and Cheerleading
Last year, 13 unchurched families participated in our Upward ministry Next year our goal is to have 26 unchurched families involved in our Upward ministry.

Alpha
Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life, running in tens of thousands of churches of all denominations, and at universities, in prisons and on military bases across the world. At an Alpha course people explore the Christian faith in a relaxed setting over ten thought-provoking weekly sessions, with a day or weekend away.
Since this a new ministry, we have no number to double, so we plan to reach 25 unchurched participants in the 20-40 age group living in Newport News through the new Alpha ministry.

To reach 80 unchurched families in 2009 through our Children and Family Ministries Outreach Activities such as:

  1. Children's Easter Celebration & Puppet Show - Saturday, April 11
  2. Vacation Bible School - June 22- 26 -- Family Night on June 26.
  3. Partnering with the UMW to reach women and children in the Ft. Eustis area.
  4. Free Family Movie Night every Wednesday evening during July and August
  5. Summer Splash - Saturday, Saturday, August 8
  6. Back-to-School Roundup - Saturday, September12
  7. Family Fall Festival - Friday, September 30
  8. Children's Christmas Workshop - Saturday, September 19
